Fire & Ice

Back in the cold month of January there was a fire at a warehouse in the south side of Chicago which burned for weeks. The temperature was so low, the water from the emergency services' hoses froze on contact and created a spectacular scene.

The Cup of Enchantment

This is my portrait of the indefatigable Tim Andrews which was taken at West Wittering Beach in Chichester earlier this week under an apocalyptic sky. His blog is here

Brasília

After I left Chile, I headed to a few places in Brasil, including a few days in the capital Brasília.

To be fair this journey was really more about Oscar Niemayer.

These photographs were taken with a Mamiya RZ67.

Orford Ness Atomic Weapons Research Establishment

Last autumn, my friend Max and I were lucky enough to visit the now-derelict Atomic Weapons Research Establishment on Orford Ness, which is a 10 mile long shingle spit on the Suffolk coast. The AWRE was operational throughout both world wars and also the Cold War, conducting tests on nuclear warheads and also experiments in over-the-horizon radar; a project codenamed Cobra Mist.
Normally, you can book a boat on the day to take you across to the spit and you can explore a limited portion of the site, but in order to reach the more interesting structures, you need to book access a few months in advance.

The Atacama Desert

I spent a few weeks in November travelling in North Chile, primarily to explore the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth.

Update

I haven't updated my blog in months. I self-published my Svalbard collection with Blurb last summer and it won an honourable mention award in the Photography Book Now competition. My friend Regina Peldszus, an extreme environments human-factors designer wrote the afterword.

It's still available here in two formats (12 & 7 inch).

I don't have anything to so with the distribution or make any profit, by the way. Your order will go directly to Blurb, who seem to be quick and efficient with customers.

Since it came out, my images have been used in various media including a piece in the current issue of PIN-UP magazine which you can find here. Very pleased to have my photograph of the aurora borealis on the cover.
